Best forex brokers in Canada

5 brokers in our data serve Canadian residents through a company regulated by the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO). Forex and CFD dealers in Canada must be CIRO investment dealers registered with the provincial regulator, so this list leaves out brands that reach Canadians only from offshore.

Quick answer

Which forex broker is best in Canada?

OANDA is first here with an overall preliminary score of 8.0/10, serving Canadians through OANDA (Canada) Corporation ULC. The deciding check in Canada is CIRO membership: CIPF covers client property held by an insolvent CIRO member, and the Ombudsman for Banking Services and Investments (OBSI) handles complaints the dealer does not settle.

  1. Find the dealer on CIRO’s list of regulated firms and on the Canadian Securities Administrators’ national registration search.
  2. Leverage in Canada follows CIRO margin requirements set per currency, not one ratio, so compare the margin rate the dealer quotes for your pair.
  3. CIPF covers client property held by an insolvent CIRO member; it does not cover trading losses.

Is forex trading regulated in Canada?

A forex or CFD dealer serving Canadians has to be a CIRO investment dealer registered with the provincial regulator. Our reference is not yet verified, and it records no data on negative balance protection, so check with CIRO and the dealer.

Not yet verified against the regulator: check the linked sources

Rules to know

  • Forex and CFD dealers in Canada must be CIRO investment dealers registered with the provincial regulator. Leverage follows CIRO margin rules per currency, not a single ratio.
  • CIPF covers client property held by an insolvent CIRO member. It does not cover trading losses.
  • We know of no rule that mandates negative balance protection in Canada.

Retail leverage caps Canada

Canada sets no single leverage ratio for retail forex: CIRO margin requirements apply per currency. We print no figure until it is checked against CIRO’s current rules.

Source: our country reference for Canada (CIRO); not yet verified.

Canada regulates margin per currency, not by one leverage cap

The UK, the EU and Australia cap major-pair leverage at one ratio for retail clients. Canada works through CIRO dealer membership, provincial registration and margin rates per currency, and it has an investor protection fund that the Australian rules lack.

  • One brand, several entities

A global broker runs separate companies for different regions. Your country of residence decides which one you sign with, not the website you land on.

  • A licence number you can check

Each entity has a number on its regulator’s register. We print the number the broker publishes; match it on the register yourself before you deposit.

  • Protections come from the entity

Leverage caps, negative balance protection and any compensation scheme come from the regulator of the entity that holds your account.

  • Offshore entities are labelled

Where a brand serves you from an offshore entity, we name it. Its higher leverage is a risk and adds nothing to a score.

What the FCA, CySEC and ASIC rules give a retail trader

  • Leverage caps

FX majors: 1:30 (FCA), 1:30 (CySEC), 1:30 (ASIC); lower on riskier assets.

  • Negative balance protection

Required for retail clients under all three regimes in our reference.

  • Margin close-out

The FCA and ESMA rules close positions at 50% of required margin; ASIC’s order also sets a close-out.

  • Compensation

Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS): £85,000 per person per firm (investments). Investor Compensation Fund (ICF) of CIFs: €20,000 per client. Australia: no general scheme for CFD client money in our reference.

  • A complaints body

Financial Ombudsman Service, Financial Ombudsman of the Republic of Cyprus, Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA).

These protections apply to accounts held by entities under those regulators. The rules for Canada are in the section above.

How we rank brokers

How to check that a Canadian dealer is registered

Registration in Canada has two layers: CIRO membership and registration with the provincial securities regulator. The Canadian entities on this page are named from the brokers’ own pages; most did not publish a CIRO firm number, and we have not yet matched them on the registers.

  1. 1Note the exact company name of the Canadian dealer from the broker’s website footer
  2. 2Find that name on CIRO’s list of dealers it regulates
  3. 3Search the same name on the CSA national registration search and check the province you live in
  4. 4Make sure your account application names that same Canadian company

Look-alike sites use the names of registered Canadian dealers. If the website address or phone number differs from the registration record, contact the dealer only through the record.

What this ranking is, and what it is not

Scores from published data; no broker pays for a place on this list.

Who writes it

Each ranking is written and checked by the Low Spread Brokers team; the date of the data is printed under every list.

How we earn

We have no affiliate or advertising agreements with brokers, and no click to a broker is paid. If that changes, the site will say so first; partner status is not an input to any score, whose formulas use spreads, platforms, licences and account terms only.

What we don’t do

No bonuses or sign-up offers. No offshore leverage presented as a feature. No claim that we tested an account we have not opened. No personal investment advice.

Best brokers by country

Each country page has its own ranking: only brokers with a company that accepts residents, ordered by a rule chosen for that country’s regulator, leverage caps and protections.

All countries

Country rules (compensation, complaints body, leverage caps) come from our country reference, which is not yet re-verified against each regulator; the regulator’s own text prevails.

Risk warning:

CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Most retail investor accounts lose money. Consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford the high risk of losing your money.

Low Spread Brokers does not give personal investment advice.

FAQ

Forex trading in Canada: questions and answers

Country rules come from our reference, which is not yet verified against the regulators; broker facts are the brokers’ published terms up to 19 Oct 2026.

Ask a question

We cannot give personal investment advice.

1Is forex trading legal in Canada?

Yes, with a dealer that is a CIRO investment dealer and registered with your provincial securities regulator. Those two records are what to check before you open an account.

Broker data collected up to 19 Oct 2026

2Do Canadian forex brokers need CIRO registration?

Per our country reference, forex and CFD dealers serving Canadian residents must be CIRO investment dealers registered with the provincial regulator. Brands that accept Canadians only through offshore companies are left out of this ranking for that reason.

Broker data collected up to 19 Oct 2026

3What leverage can I use in Canada?

There is no single ratio: CIRO sets margin requirements per currency. Ask the dealer for the margin rate on the pair you trade; we will print figures once checked against CIRO’s current rules.

Broker data collected up to 19 Oct 2026

4Is CIPF protection available for forex accounts?

CIPF covers client property held by a CIRO member that becomes insolvent, up to C$1,000,000 per account category (CIRO dealer members) per our reference. It does not cover losses from trading. Confirm the current limit on cipf.ca.

Broker data collected up to 19 Oct 2026

5Where do I complain about a Canadian broker?

To the dealer first, in writing. If that does not settle it, take it to OBSI (obsi.ca), and you can report conduct concerns to CIRO.
