Advertiser disclosure: we have no affiliate or advertising agreements with brokers, and no click to a broker is paid. If that changes, this notice changes first. How we make money
All 12 brokers below serve South African residents through a company authorised by the Financial Sector Conduct Authority. The FSCA requires that authorisation for over-the-counter derivative providers, but our reference records no retail leverage cap, so each broker sets its own.
Low Spread Brokers does not give personal investment advice.
For traders who live in South Africa and want their account with a brand’s FSCA-authorised company rather than its offshore arm. With no FSCA leverage cap to tell brokers apart, the list is sorted by our costs score. Read first:how we rankhow we make moneySouth Africa rules
Admirals (Admiral Markets) is first here on our costs score (8.0/10), serving South Africans through Admirals SA (Pty) Ltd (FSCA, FSP 51311). The deciding check is the entity: an FSCA-authorised one answers to South African conduct rules and to the FAIS Ombud.
Search the FSP number the broker publishes on the FSCA website and check the company name.
Ask for the maximum leverage on your account in writing: our reference records no FSCA cap.
Ask whether negative balance protection applies: our reference records no rule that requires it.
FSCA-authorised brokers for South African residents, ranked by cost
Ranked by this page’s rule from published broker data, not by commission. Advertiser disclosure
Why this order: only brokers with an FSCA-authorised or Tier 1 entity that accepts South African residents, sorted by our costs score from published EUR/USD spreads and commissions, because the FSCA sets no leverage cap that would separate them. Why #7Costs score: 6.8/10. Residents of South Africa are served by XM ZA (Pty) Ltd (FSCA, Tier 2, licence FSP 49976). The XM brand runs on an offshore entity (FSC Belize, leverage up to 1:1000) and a CySEC entity for the EEA; the group’s FCA, ASIC and US licences belong to the sister brand Trading.com, not to XM.
CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Most retail investor accounts lose money. Consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford the high risk of losing your money.

FXCM UK (Stratos Markets Limited) is selling its client book to Trade Nation, announced 6 Oct 2026 with completion expected in late November 2026; new UK accounts are opened through Trade Nation, so FXCM is not presented as open to new UK clients. Is forex trading regulated in South Africa?
Over-the-counter derivative providers need FSCA authorisation (an FSP licence, plus the ODP requirements under the Financial Markets Act). Our reference is not yet verified, so open the FSCA links before you rely on it.
Not yet verified against the regulator: check the linked sources
Our reference records no statutory retail leverage cap for over-the-counter FX and CFDs in South Africa: brokers set their own. We print no figure until it is checked against the current FSCA conduct standards.
Source: our country reference for South Africa (FSCA); not yet verified.
South Africa licenses brokers but sets no leverage cap
The FCA, CySEC and ASIC cap major-pair leverage for retail clients and require negative balance protection. The FSCA authorises over-the-counter derivative providers, yet our reference records neither a leverage cap nor a negative balance rule, so those terms depend on the broker.

One brand, several entities
A global broker runs separate companies for different regions. Your country of residence decides which one you sign with, not the website you land on.
A licence number you can check
Each entity has a number on its regulator’s register. We print the number the broker publishes; match it on the register yourself before you deposit.
What the FCA, CySEC and ASIC rules give a retail trader
Leverage caps
FX majors: 1:30 (FCA), 1:30 (CySEC), 1:30 (ASIC); lower on riskier assets.
Negative balance protection
Required for retail clients under all three regimes in our reference.
Margin close-out
The FCA and ESMA rules close positions at 50% of required margin; ASIC’s order also sets a close-out.
Compensation
Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS): £85,000 per person per firm (investments). Investor Compensation Fund (ICF) of CIFs: €20,000 per client. Australia: no general scheme for CFD client money in our reference.
A complaints body
Financial Ombudsman Service, Financial Ombudsman of the Republic of Cyprus, Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA).
These protections apply to accounts held by entities under those regulators. The rules for South Africa are in the section above.

FSCA-authorised firms publish a financial services provider (FSP) number. The numbers on this page are the ones the brokers publish; we have not yet matched them on the FSCA register.
1Copy the FSP number and the company name from the broker’s South African website footer
2Search the number on the FSCA website
3Check that the company name matches and the authorisation is current
4Make sure your account application names that same South African company
Clones reuse real FSP numbers on look-alike websites. If the contact details on the FSCA record differ from the site you are on, contact the firm only through the record.

What does not affect a score
Partner status and advertising. We have no affiliate or advertising agreements with brokers.
We have no affiliate or advertising agreements with brokers, and no click to a broker is paid. If that changes, the site will say so first; partner status is not an input to any score, whose formulas use spreads, platforms, licences and account terms only.
What we don’t do
No bonuses or sign-up offers. No offshore leverage presented as a feature. No claim that we tested an account we have not opened. No personal investment advice.
Each country page has its own ranking: only brokers with a company that accepts residents, ordered by a rule chosen for that country’s regulator, leverage caps and protections.
Country rules (compensation, complaints body, leverage caps) come from our country reference, which is not yet re-verified against each regulator; the regulator’s own text prevails.
Risk warning:
CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Most retail investor accounts lose money. Consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford the high risk of losing your money.

Forex trading in South Africa: questions and answers
Country rules come from our reference, which is not yet verified against the regulators; broker facts are the brokers’ published terms up to 19 Oct 2026.
Yes, through a provider authorised by the FSCA. Over-the-counter derivative providers need an FSP licence and must meet the ODP requirements under the Financial Markets Act, per our country reference.
Broker data collected up to 19 Oct 2026
2How do I check an FSCA licence?
Take the FSP number from the broker’s South African website and search it on fsca.co.za. The company name on the record should match the one in your account application.
Broker data collected up to 19 Oct 2026
3What leverage can South African traders use?
Our reference records no statutory cap for retail OTC FX and CFDs, so brokers set their own. Ask for the figure on your account in writing; leverage multiplies losses as much as gains.
Broker data collected up to 19 Oct 2026
4What protects my money if a South African broker fails?
Our reference records no investor compensation scheme and no negative balance protection rule for over-the-counter derivative providers. Ask the broker how it holds client money before you deposit.
Broker data collected up to 19 Oct 2026
5Where do South African traders complain about a broker?
To the broker first, in writing. If that does not settle it, the Office of the FAIS Ombud (faisombud.co.za) handles complaints against authorised financial services providers.
Broker data collected up to 19 Oct 2026
6Do I pay tax on forex profits in South Africa?
Tax depends on your circumstances and on how SARS treats your trading. We do not give tax advice: see sars.gov.za or ask a registered tax practitioner.
