Forex trading in the UK
Currency trading in the UK is legal and supervised by the Financial Conduct Authority. A UK retail client of an FCA-authorised firm gets leverage of up to 1:30 on major pairs, negative balance protection, a close-out at 50% of margin and FSCS cover of £85,000 per person per firm (investments) if the firm fails. 14 brokers in our data have an FCA company that accepts UK residents.

- 1UK sales desks handled 38% of global currency trading in April 2025, the largest share of any country (BIS).
- 2FCA retail caps: 1:30 on major pairs, 1:20 on other pairs and gold; crypto derivatives are banned for retail clients.
- 3FSCS cover is £85,000 per person per firm (investments); it pays when a firm fails, not when a trade loses.
- 4Companies with UK in their name publish loss rates from 58.9% to 76% of retail accounts.
Quick answer
Is forex trading legal in the UK?
Yes. Firms offering forex CFDs or spread bets to UK residents must be authorised by the FCA, and their retail clients get the protections of FCA policy statement PS19/18: leverage capped at 1:30 on major pairs, positions closed when equity falls to 50% of the required margin, losses limited to the account balance and a risk warning with the firm’s own share of losing accounts. Before depositing, search the firm on the FCA Register and check that the website listed there is the one you are using.
- Your account must be with the UK company of the brand, not an offshore one.
- Spread bets and CFDs carry the same leverage caps and protections; tax treatment can differ.
- Complaints the firm does not resolve go to the Financial Ombudsman Service.
Who regulates forex trading in the UK
The FCA authorises firms that offer CFDs and spread bets to UK residents and lists each one on the FCA Register with a firm reference number (FRN), its permissions and its approved websites. Trading with an unauthorised firm leaves you outside the FSCS and the Financial Ombudsman Service.
London is the centre of the market: BIS data put 38% of global FX turnover through UK sales desks in April 2025. That volume is mostly banks and funds; retail forex traders in the UK trade through brokers.
FCA rules for retail forex traders
PS19/18 applies to CFDs and spread bets sold to retail clients. Each rule below is set by the regulator, so it is the same at every FCA-authorised firm.
- Leverage caps by asset: 1:30 major pairs, 1:20 other pairs, gold and major indices, 1:10 other commodities and indices, 1:5 shares.
- Margin close-out: positions are closed when equity falls to 50% of the margin they require.
- Negative balance protection: you cannot lose more than the money in your account.
- A standard risk warning that states the firm’s own percentage of losing retail accounts.
- Crypto derivatives may not be sold to retail clients (PS20/10).
Professional clients lose the leverage cap and negative balance protection. Firms may only reclassify you if you meet the FCA’s criteria and accept the loss of protections in writing.
Which forex brokers accept UK traders
14 of the brands in our data have an FCA company that accepts UK residents. IC Markets, FP Markets and AvaTrade have no UK company in our data. Exness and XM do not open retail accounts for UK residents through a UK company. FXCM’s UK client book is being sold to Trade Nation, so we leave it out of UK lists until the sale completes.

Spread betting vs CFDs for UK forex traders
A spread bet is a stake in pounds per point of movement; a CFD is a contract for a number of units of the currency, and on raw accounts it is charged a commission. Both are leveraged, both fall under PS19/18, and both are offered by FCA firms in our data, though only 5 of them list a spread betting account: CMC Markets, IG, Pepperstone, ThinkMarkets and Vantage.
HMRC can tax spread betting and CFD trading differently, and the result depends on your circumstances. We do not give tax advice: read HMRC’s guidance on GOV.UK or ask a qualified tax adviser before choosing one for tax reasons.

What protects your money if a UK broker fails
FCA firms must hold retail client money in segregated accounts. If a firm fails and money is missing, the FSCS can pay up to £85,000 per person per firm (investments). Some brokers state a different limit on their own pages: OANDA’s UK site gives £50,000, while Tickmill and XTB state £120,000. Check your case with the FSCS rather than the broker.
Complaints go to the firm first; if it does not resolve them, to the Financial Ombudsman Service, which is free for consumers.
Is forex trading profitable in the UK?
For most retail clients, no. Loss rates published by companies with UK in their name run from 58.9% at Interactive Brokers (U.K.) Limited to 76% at Plus500UK Ltd, across 9 figures checked up to 19 Oct 2026. Pepperstone shows the difference a company makes: 73.6% for its UK company, 88% for its Kenyan one.
How to spot a forex trading scam
Most forex scams aimed at UK residents use one of three tricks: a firm that is not on the FCA Register, a clone that copies a real firm’s name and FRN with its own website or phone number, or an “account manager” who trades for you and promises returns. No authorised firm can guarantee a trading profit.
- Search the firm on the FCA Register yourself and compare the website, e-mail and phone number.
- Look the name up on the FCA warning list at ScamSmart.
- Never move money to a personal account or a crypto wallet to “fund” trading.
- Treat requests to pay a fee before a withdrawal as a sign of fraud.
What a UK trade costs: spread or commission
Every FCA broker in our data prices in the spread, and some add a commission per lot on a raw account. Pepperstone, for example, charges GBP 2.25 per lot per side on its raw account. Compare spread plus commission on the pair you trade, in your account currency.

Standard and raw account on one lot of EUR/USD
Assumptions: 1 standard lot (100,000 units) of EUR/USD at USD 10 per pip, published spreads of Pepperstone checked 19 Oct 2026. The commission is charged in GBP and is added to the spread at face value, without conversion.
| Item | Standard account | Raw account |
|---|---|---|
| Spread (pips and value) | 1.1 pips · $11.00 | 0.1 pips · $1.00 |
| Commission, round turn (GBP) | $0.00 | £4.50 |
| Spread plus commission | $11.00 | $1.00 + £4.50 |
Verdict: the raw account is cheaper only while the spread it saves is worth more than the GBP commission; convert the commission at the day’s rate before you compare the totals.

Check a UK forex broker before you deposit
The FRNs in our data are as the brokers publish them; we have not yet matched each one on the FCA Register.
- 1Find the firm reference number (FRN) in the footer of the broker’s UK website.
- 2Search the FRN or the firm’s name on the FCA Register yourself, not through a link the broker sent you.
- 3Check that the website addresses and permissions on the register match the company named in your client agreement.
- 4Search the name on ScamSmart for warnings about clones.
Where to check
Spot a clone firm
A clone uses a real firm’s name and FRN with a different website, e-mail or phone number. If the contact details differ from the FCA Register, do not deposit.
Risk warning:
CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Most retail investor accounts lose money. Consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford the high risk of losing your money.
